Local History Digital Archivist
TITLE OF SUPERVISOR: Assistant Library Director/ Adult Services Coordinator
LEVEL OF POSITION: Part-time Temporary Internship
I. DESCRIPTION
Under supervision of Assistant Director and other library staff, performs duties associated with creating and maintaining an accessible database of historical Coralville photos and documents. Also performs community outreach and collection development in order to expand content and facilitate access to the database.
II. SPECIAL AND/OR SPECIFIC DUTIES
Manages all aspects of a digital collection of historical Coralville documents.
III. QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education/Experience/Licenses
1. Coursework toward a Masters Degree in Library Science or related field is preferred.
2. Experience working with digital collections and interest in local history preferred.
B. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Must have general knowledge of library operations and procedures, especially principals of description of, organization of, and access to information.
2. Must have knowledge of principals and procedures of local history collections and digitization of collections. This includes knowledge of scanning, permissions, metadata, and access, as well as the ability to assess the importance of historical documents.
3. Familiarity with online content management systems for digital collections, preferably Omeka.
4. Must have ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
5. Must have ability to communicate effectively and enthusiastically to the public about projects.
IV. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Ability to effectively communicate with patrons, citizens, the Library Board, City Council and employees by telephone, in writing, or through face-to-face contact.
B. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees, officials and the public.
C. Ability to hear speech and other sounds effectively to allow for answering patrons questions, taking directions from supervisors and operating the telephone.
D. Ability to operate office and library equipment including computers, Internet and software.
E. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
F. Ability to bend repetitively, stoop and stand on a stool to shelve library materials.
G. Physical agility, strength and dexterity necessary for handling large numbers of books on a daily basis.
H. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds for shifting library materials within the library.
I. Ability to search through catalog files on computer to help patrons find what they need.
J. Ability to turn pages in a book or magazine.
K. Shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace or patrons encountered during work.
L. Possess the intellectual ability, judgment, stamina, and coordination necessary to normally complete daily assigned tasks within the workday.
M. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with library patrons and other staff members.
