Novel Conversations (with some nonfiction) at the Coralville Public Library

Novel Conversations is a book group that alternates between classic novels and more recent works of fiction and nonfiction. Participants are welcome to come to all the meetings or just those that sound interesting.  Multiple copies of each book are available for checkout in the library and are, whenever possible, made available in large print, audiobook, and ebook editions.

Novel Conversations meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm on Zoom.  Email mjorgensen@coralville.org for the Zoom link.

An American Summer by Alex KotlowitzIn October we are discussing:
The One Community, One Book Selection
An American Summer: Love and Death in Chicago by Alex Kotlowitz

This is a captivating collection of stories that will transform the way readers think about gun violence in America. Over the past 20 years in Chicago, 14,033 people have been killed and another 60,000 wounded by gunfire. The latest book by Kotlowitz examines the psychological toll gun violence takes on the spirit of individuals and communities.

Launched in 2001 by UICHR founders Dorothy Paul and Burns Weston, One Community, One Book was uniquely envisioned as a collaborative effort between the University of Iowa campus and community to promote human rights education through the reading of literature. Groups from around the City and County, such as public libraries, high schools, the Oakdale correctional facility, and the Iowa City Senior Center have collaborated to host local events such as discussion forums, book groups, film screenings, and author visits.
